Day 1 – Arriving in Kathmandu (4500ft) // (Hotel Manang)
Arriving in Kathmandu. Kathmandu is an awesome bustling city.
Most of you all aren’t staying there more than a day and I think that’s fine. One typically gets sick of KTM after a day anyways. It’s just too noisy, dusty, busy, and the opposite of why we’re in the area in the first place (SHOW ME THE NATURE!!).
Day 2 – Phakding (8700 ft) // (Budda Lodge)
The next morning, we’ll wake up early-ish and head to the airport to catch a flight to Lukla. If you google “most dangerous” airports, chances are you’ll hear about this flight and the Lukla airport. It’s nothing to worry about tbh — there are flights in and out of this airport dozens of times a day. It’s fine. But it’s definitely an experience. 45 minutes from Kathmandu, we’ll be basically going from dusty, polluted, sea-level city to 7000ft above sea level, village in the mountains. It’s pretty sweet.
Day 3 – Namche Bazaar (11,283ft) // (Moonlight Lodge)
Today is going to be a tough one. Considered one of the more grueling days (mostly because we are new to the altitude), today’s hike will take about 5-6 hours. There’s no rush, so it’s all about going at your pace and taking in the beautiful surroundings. Lots of uphill slogging here and some seriously epic suspension bridge crossings. But this will all be good acclimatization.
Day 4 – Namche Bazaar (11,283ft) // (Moonlight Lodge)
Another day in Namche. We need the extra day here to acclimatize. Depending on how everyone is feeling, we’ll go on a day-hike and check out some nearby villages Khunde and Kumjung (where a lot of the Sherpa climbers are from). We will also make today’s goal to reach Everest View Hotel, one of the nicer hotels in the region and one where you typically can see Everest (duh). We’ll breath in the higher altitude air and then head back down to Namche for dinner and some rest.
Day 5 – Deboche (12,684ft) // (Paradise Lodge)
Today is one of my favorites. But it’s a bitch. We start off going up a little bit then down, down, down hill. We hit the very bottom of the surrounding valley and then it’s all uphill. The Tengboche Monastery sits on top of a big hill that is just an endless trail of switchbacks. Take your time up this thing and you’ll be fine. You’ll be rewarded with amazing views and the monastery itself (which is worth a visit – you can see the famed “YETI SKULL”).
Day 6 – Dingboche (14,295 ft) // (Bright Star Lodge)
Today starts off super cold since we’re in the middle of the valley and the sun won’t hit till later, so bundle up. We start off gently downhill, crossing the valley floor and then it’s all uphill. You’ll get some beautiful views of Ama Dablam and some of the other Himalayan giants, so it’s worth it.
Day 7 – Dingboche (14,295 ft) // (Bright Star Lodge)
Today is an acclimatization day, so we’ll take it easy.
Day 8: Lobuche (16,164ft) (New EBC Lodge)
Starting from today, the altitude will make things a lot tougher. Heading out of Dingboche, we cross a massive plateau with mountains surrounding us (it’s hard to keep moving because all you want to do is stop and take pictures) and then we hit some serious uphill sections. You’ll pass through the famous Everest Memorial (where you’ll see memorials for fallen mountaineers of past).
Day 9: Hike to Kala Patthar-Pheriche (18,204ft Kala Pattar // 14,295ft Pheriche) (Himalayan Lodge)
Right out the backdoor of Gorak Shep is the trail up Kala Pattar a small “mountain” that we can trek in about 1-2 hours. At the top: glorious views of Everest and Lhotse. This will be your epic IG picture for sure. Once we’ve summited, it’s all downhill from here. Pheriche is at a significantly lower elevation so we’ll sleep amazingly with all that oxygen. This is one of my favorite hikes out. It’s just pleasant all the way down.
Day 10: Gorak Shep-Everest Base Camp- Gorak Shep (17,450EBC // 16,929 Gorekshep)
Today’s the day we trek to Everest Base Camp. It’s a long day, but nothing insanely hard. Again, it’s the altitude that makes everything slow.
After we reach EBC, we take a helicopter ride down to Lukla before flying to Kathmandu, Nepal!
